Founded in Hawaii by Frank Orrall initially as a solo project and then evolving into what it is today with more than two decades worth of touring under his belt. In the '80s, Poi Dog Pondering was known for its acoustically driven rock music. The band first took to performing on street corners and then went on to record three albums in Austin before relocating to Chicago in 1992, where they introduced orchestral arrangements with elements of electronic house and soul sounds into this style.

Unlike many other bands of this era, Satellite Poi's membership list is both a Who’s who and annotated with details about what instruments they played. Most prominent amongst these members are vocalists Abra Moore, as well as Malford Milligan, sound artist Ellen Fullman, drummer Sean Coffey, turntable operator Ashton "DJ Cassanova" Irons, who credits his moniker from playing funk music under various aliases.
