Michelle Phalen was the first softball coach in Pittsburgh history. After beginning their first season as an independent team, the Panthers joined the Big East Conference from 1999 to 2013. The Panthers reached their first Big East Tournament in 2006. That season was also the first winning season in the program’s history. Holly Aprile took over as head coach in 2009. She immediately brought success to Vartabedian Field. Her first three seasons as head coach ended with winning records. The 2011 season ended with a then-record of 34 wins. It also included victories over nationally-ranked opponents such as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Pitt moved to the ACC in 2013. Two years later, the Panthers played in the ACC Softball Tournament championship game against Florida State. The success of the 2015 season earned the Pitt Panthers softball team an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Fans were able to purchase Pittsburgh softball tickets to the Regional Final during the 2015 season. The 2018 season ended with Pitt’s first ACC Coastal Division Championship in school history. Vartabedian Field is where home games are played. Trees Field, also located on the Pitt campus, used to be the home of the Pittsburgh Panthers softball team.
