Barrett and Gilmour busked through Europe together while Waters studied architecture in London and formed R&B band Sigma 6, with Rick Wright and Nick Mason. Other bands followed until they recruited Barrett and Gilmour to form The Pink Floyd Sound in 1965, merging the names of blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Their innovative, psychedelic sound established them at the heart of London's underground counter-culture and, built around Barrett's quirky songs, they signed to EMI and in 1967 released the hits 'Arnold Layne' and 'See Emily Play'. Due to his drug use and erratic behavior, the unstable Barrett was an early casualty and agreed to leave the band in 1968, with Waters the main creative force behind their classic concept albums 'The Dark Side of the Moon' (1973) - which became one of the best-selling albums of all time - 'Wish You Were Here' (1975) and 'Animals' (1977), and Waters providing the inspiration for 'The Wall' (1979). Waters acrimoniously left in 1985 but was emotionally reunited with Floyd at the 2005 Live 8 concert in London. In 2016, Pink Floyd released the remastered collection 'The Early Years 1965-1972' followed three years later by 'The Later Years 1987-2019'.
