While he was born in Thailand, Viphurit lived in New Zealand from the age of nine and learned to play the drums and then the guitar throughout his childhood. After returning to Thailand to attend university for film studies, Phum Viphurit began composing and posting covers and original music on YouTube before signing to Rats Records, an indie label. This is firmly reflected in his second LP The Greng Jai Piece, with ‘greng jai’ as its name in Thailand referring to the practice of politeness that is familiar within Asian cultures.
