Oundjian was born and bred in Toronto but spent his early life in Surrey, England, where he was a choral singer and violinist. During his teenage years, Oundjian performed various recitals, concerts, and chamber music throughout England on a regular basis. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was given the Tagore Gold Medal by Queen Elizabeth in 1975.
He was named Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 2004, and his appointment rejuvenated the orchestra with recordings, tours, and innovative programming that has made him a popular guest conductor. He has also increased audience size significantly. The ensemble has changed dramatically since he took the helm. Under his direction, it underwent a metamorphosis that significantly enhanced its presence in the global community. In 2008 and 2011, the TSO presented sold-out performances at Carnegie Hall. Between 2012 and 2018, Oundjian was the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's (RSNO) Music Director. They've collaborated on albums for Chandos and Sony in Britten's massive War Requiem at the BBC Proms in 2018, a performance that will go down as one of his life's most truly amazing experiences. That same year, at the urging of Pinchas Zukerman, Oundjian enrolled in the Juilliard School, where he studied with Ivan Galamian, Itzhak Perlman, and Dorothy DeLay.
