Born in New Bedford in 1954, Souza studied communications at Boston University before earning an advanced degree in journalism from Kansas State University. 

Souza’s professional career began in the late 70s and early 80s with roles at the Hutchinson News and Chicago Sun-Times. In 1983 he became an official White House photographer for Ronald Reagan, continuing to work in Washington D.C. after the close of Reagan’s administration. In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Souza worked for The Chicago Tribune, National Geographic and Life. 

In 2004 the photographer began documenting Barack Obama’s tenure in the Senate, and in 2008 published the best-selling photo book The Rise of Barack Obama. He went on to serve as Chief Official White House Photographer following Obama’s presidential inauguration.
