McLaughlin started to write music and perform solo at open mic nights as well as busking in the streets by the San Francisco Bay. He moved to Boston for a short time before moving again to Nashville.

In Nashville, McLaughlin started a band, releasing their debut album in 1980. They then made two more recordings with Capitol Records as well the album Pat McLaughlin in 1988. In that same year, his song “Lynda,” sung by Steve Wariner hit number one in the Billboard Country Charts and won McLaughlin his first BMI Country Award.

Songs of McLaughlin’s have been recorded by such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood and Gary Allan, who recorded McLaughlin’s “Songs About Rain,” in 2003, which would earn McLaughlin his third BMI Country Award.
