Born in Barcelona in 1972 to a musical family, Penas found a love for music watching his grandfather play the trumpet as part of the Orquesta Gran Gala. He began learning to play classical guitar at nine years old, and as a teenager became fascinated with jazz. Penas then studied jazz guitar under Vicenc Solsona at Barcelona’s Taller de Musics.
In the 2000s Penas moved to the US to study music at both the New England Conservatory and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon completing his studies, the artist formed the Oscar Penas Group, with whom he released the albums Astronautus and The Return of Astronautus in 2003 and 2005, respectively. Penas also released his solo album Music of Departures and Returns in 2014, which featured a slew of Grammy Award-winning artists including Gil Goldstein, Esperanza Spalding and Paquito D’Rivera. Penas has earned numerous accolades including three awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and an Independent Music Award nomination for Best Song, Jazz Instrumental.
