He is best known for working as a sideman for artists and bands such as Bobby Watson, Ralph Peterson, Duane Eubanks and The Bad Plus, where he took the place of Ethan Iverson.

Evans began studying piano early as a child. He then would learn informally from jazz icons such as Trudy Pitts, Shirley Scott and Mickey Roker. He then studied at The Grand Academic Music Program before entering the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers and also being taught by Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Ralph Bowen and Ted Dunbar.
