The group came together in the late ‘80s in South Jamaica, Queens, releasing their debut album Bacdafucup in 1993. The album would be certified platinum, reaching within the top 25 on the Billboard 200. At the Soul Train Music Awards later that year, Bacdafucup would win Best Rap Album. 1993 also saw the release of Onyx’s hit single “Slam,” widely credited with introducing slam dancing to hip hop music. 

The sometimes controversial rap group developed a cult following due to their chaotic live shows, shows which featured the members fighting each other, stage diving and throwing nearby objects at the audience.
