After the stage is set, the couple is joined by their daughter Chelsea who comes to visit, along with fiancé Billy Ray and his son Billy Ray Jr. The play explores the dynamics of the father and daughter as she grew up, as well as the challenges of a couple living in their twilight years.
The original production of the play ran in the New Apollo Theater for 126 performances in 1979, starring Frances Sternhagen as Ethel, Tom Eldredge as Norman and Barbara Andres as Chelsea. It won a Tony award for Best Actress in a Play for Sternhagen. The play also won several Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Actor in a Play for Eldredge and Outstanding Actress in a Play for Sternhagen. It also was a 1979 selection in the Burns Mantle Theater Yearbook 1978-1979.
The play reopened with the same cast at the Century Theatre and ran for 256 performances. During the course of the run, Ben Stack replaced Ronn Carroll. Experience bittersweet family drama with On Golden Pond tickets.
