Born in 1965 in Camaguey, Sosa developed an interest in music studying percussion at Cuba’s Instituto Superior de Arte and Escuela Nacional de Musica. In the early ‘80s, he founded the band Tributo, with whom he recorded and toured widely. Sosa collaborated with several Latin jazz bands as well as famed Cuban singer Xiomara Laugart before moving to San Francisco.
During his time in the Bay area, the artist released a handful of solo albums, three of which would earn Grammy nominations for Latin jazz. In 2010 Sosa released the album Ceremony, a collaboration with the North German Radio Bigband, for which he won the Jazz Album award at the Independent Music Awards. He primarily releases music through his self-created Ota label.
Sosa has since collaborated with numerous high-profile artists including Adam Rudolph, Seckou Keita and Paolo Fresu. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he plays both the Rhodes piano and the marimba in addition to a traditional piano.
