The festival is one of the oldest festivals of its kind, being established in 1988. 

The inaugural event was held at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock, Texas. It eventually relocated to the Stone Mountains Event Center in Dripping Springs and then to the Salt Lick BBQ Pavillion and then Camp Ben McCulloch in Drift Wood. Its current location is in Tilmon, Texas, over a sprawling 145-acre spread.
