The parade marches through Lower Manhattan, moving south on Fifth Avenue, through Greenwich Village and passing the Stonewall National Monument. In 1984 it started to be officially organized by Heritage of Pride, whose mission is to work toward a future where all people, no matter their sexual orientation, have equal rights under the law. The largest NYC Pride March happened in 2019 that coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots where an estimated four million people attended the march.
NYC Pride puts on an array of events outside the actual march the whole month of June. Its Human Rights Conference is NYC Pride’s annual symposium that has transformative changemakers in the queer community that focus on coming up with new approaches to activism. There have also been concerts in the past where singers like Miley Cyrus have performed. NYC Pride even puts on a family movie night where organizations and queer families present before the movie starts.
