The North State Symphony was formed in 2001 as a merging of the Chico and Redding symphonies and operates as part of the College of Humanities and Fine Art at California State University. The inaugural conductor of the symphony was Kyle Willey Pickett.
The Chico State Normal School initiated its symphony orchestra in 1905, allowing the North State Symphony to declare 2005 its centennial anniversary. In 2014, Scott Seaton accepted the position of new Music Director and Conductor. The approximately 70-member musicians in the orchestra are comprised of both professionals in Northern California as well as students.

Seaton has received degrees at the University of Montreal, the New England Conservatory and Vanderbilt University. He has performed with such orchestras as the Juneau Symphony, the Kamloops Symphony, the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg. He was the 2001 winner of INTERAKTION competition, enabling him to play with the top orchestras in Germany.
The orchestra’s concertmaster is Terrie Baune, who has performed with the NSS since its inception in 2001. She is married to the former principal violist of the NSS Symphony.
