The Bison team first walked on the mat officially in 1957, when inaugural head coach Tom Nueberger led the team to a victory over Valley City State University in a dual meet. Other significant coaches in the program include former three-time national champion wrestler Arthur “Bucky” Maughan. Maughan coached from 1964 to 2011. In his tenure as head coach, the team won 18 North Central Conference championships. The team also won four NCAA Division II Championships, the first being in 1988. Maughan also led the team during its transition from NCAA Division I to Division II. He has been elected to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
