He performed as Paul in the Peter, Paul, and Mary trio that allowed him to be part of the American folk music revival in the 1960s. Stookey incorporated some of his solo songs into The Peter, Paul, and Mary trio. In addition to incorporating his songs in the trio’s productions, he also released several solo works and several albums with the ensemble Bodyworks. He was an important aspect of the Jesus music movement, which then turned into the Christian music industry.
In 1986, Stookey teamed up with a new trio. He teamed up with Jim Newton, Paul G. Hill, and Denny Brouchard at the Celebration Shop in Texas. The group of four men used original music compositions as therapy for special needs children. Soon the four individuals became known as Hugworks. Through his work at Hugworks, Stookey was awarded the Kate Wolf Memorial Award by the World Folk Music Association. Noel and his daughter, Elizabeth, founded the nonprofit Music to Life. The goal of this nonprofit organization was used to educate individuals on social movements using music. Other than being known as a performer in the Peter, Paul, and Mary trio, he is best known for the composition of “The Wedding Song.” It is still used for weddings today.
