Born in Cambridge in 1956, Freelon first began singing at churches in her local community. She fell in love with jazz listening to her parents’ Billy Eckstine and Nina Simone records, and in 1990 attended the jazz meeting of the Southern Arts Federation. The event proved fateful, as here she met jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis. Marsalis helped Freelon prepare a demo for Columbia Records, with whom she signed in 1992. She released her eponymous debut album through the label later that year. 

Freelon has since enjoyed a successful career working with artists as varied as Ray Charles, Anita Baker and Aretha Franklin. She has given performances at a slew of prominent venues including the Apollo Theater, the Hollywood Bowl and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Noted for her community outreach, Freelon is the face of the National Association of Partners in Education. She has earned numerous accolades including the Eubie Blake Award from the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and the Billie Holiday Award from the Academie du Jazz.
