When he was 17, he began singing in a church choir and taught himself to play the piano. His love of music and talent grew so rapidly that he was then accepted into the Berkley College of Music where his career began. In 2014, while at Berkley, Hakim released his first EPs.
A few years later in 2017, he collaborated with ATO records to produce his debut album Green Twins and then launched an international tour. Green Twins quickly received great reviews and NPR named one of the Ten Best R&B Albums of 2017. He released his second album in 2020 and collaborated with artist Erykah Badu on her live stream concert series.
