Born in New Orleans in 1973, Payton debuted on the trumpet at the early age of nine as part of his father’s Young Tuxedo Brass Band. By ten, he was playing with Hames Andrews’ All-Star Bass group and had a gig on Bourbon Street at The Famous Door.

Those early years were followed by a long career as a trumpet player and multi-instrumentalist. In the ’90s, Nicholas Payton went on tour with Elvin Jones and Marcus Roberts before signing his own contract with Verve Records and beginning to produce his own albums, starting with the release of From This Moment in 1995. Two years later he was honored with a Grammy for Best Instrumental Solo for a number on an album titled Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton.

He also plays piano, bass, trombone, clarinet, drums and saxophone, and has been known to collaborate with music legends including Ray Charles, Allen Touissant and Joe Henderson. Payton has also released records with Warner Bros, beginning with Sonic Trance, and currently owns his own record label, called Paytone Records.

Nicholas Payton’s sound is constantly evolving. Besides his basis in jazz, he also touches on blues, rock, and electronic sounds. He cites influences far and wide for his music, from Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard to Stevie Wonder and Prince. Some recent albums include 2nd Chances and Quarantined with Nick, and he still tours the country solo, in duos, quartets, and with full symphonies.
