The New Haven Symphony Orchestra began when, in 1894, German immigrant Morris Steinert was persuaded by a group of amateur musicians in New Haven, most of them also German immigrants, to start a symphony orchestra. The orchestra’s first rehearsal space was in a room above Steinert’s piano shop, and the orchestra played their first concert in 1895. That first program included works by Bach, Beethoven and Schubert.
In its early years, the orchestra had close ties with Yale, and many of its concertmasters and conductors came from the university’s music program. Since then, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra has grown into an independent organization and has branched out beyond classical music.
Classical music has always been the foundation of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire, and the organization had the honor of performing the world premiere of the complete five-movement version of Mahler’s first symphony. In 1939, the Civic Orchestra was formed for the purpose of performing light classics that would appeal to a broad audience, including Gilbert and Sullivan and single movements of famous symphonies.
