They are known for their genre-bending approach to bluegrass that combines elements from Appalachian, Celtic and Eastern European folk melodies. The members are Erik Alvar, Alan Grubner, Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff. 

Nefesh Mountain was founded by Zasloff and Lindberg in 2014. Zasloff had previously risen to fame with the Mama Doni Band, with whom she won the Simcha Award at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival. Lindberg originally studied jazz at Rutgers University before returning to his childhood love–bluegrass music–after graduation. 

In 2016 Nefesh Mountain released their eponymous debut album, which featured contributions by well-known bluegrass musicians Scott Vestal, Sam Bush and Rob Ickes. In the years that followed, the band refined their signature sound that combines indigenous folk styles with politically and socially conscious lyrics. They have amassed a devoted following in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Brooklyn in particular. Nefesh Mountain received national recognition for their performances for the Americana Music Association and the International Bluegrass Music Association especially.
