My Morning Jacket or MMJ, formed in 1998 by singer-songwriter Jim James, emerged from Louisville, Ky., as a genre-defying rock band blending psychedelic, reggae and electronic influences into their sound. Named after an old jacket with the initials "MMJ" on it, the band started with friends and family members, releasing their debut album, The Tennessee Fire, in 1999. The album found unexpected success in Europe, establishing an early fanbase and drawing attention for its haunting, reverb-drenched sound. My Morning Jacket’s follow-up, At Dawn (2001), continued to expand their reach, with emotive vocals and atmospheric production setting them apart in the indie music scene.
Their 2005 album, Z, marked their U.S. breakthrough, earning critical acclaim for its adventurous production and eclectic mix of rock and experimental sounds. Rolling Stone praised Z, comparing MMJ’s daring approach to that of Radiohead. This era also saw the release of their celebrated live album Okonokos (2006). Popular tracks like “One Big Holiday,” “Golden” and “Wordless Chorus” became fan favorites, solidifying the band's reputation as live music heavyweights. Albums Evil Urges (2008) and The Waterfall (2015), both Grammy-nominated for Best Alternative Music Album, further demonstrated MMJ’s versatility, with The Waterfall debuting at #11 on the Billboard 200. The Waterfall II (2020) added to this streak, offering fans a fresh look at the band’s signature sound.
My Morning Jacket has performed at music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. Over the years, the band has shared stages with artists like Pearl Jam, Band of Horses and The Black Keys. Buy My Morning Jackets to witness one of America's most beloved rock bands perform hits like "Run It" and " Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt. 2" live in concert.
