As a young teen, Crossan played guitar, bass and drums in local bands. At age 15, he started self-producing on YouTube. Two years later, he uploaded his electronic songs to SoundCloud under the pseudonym Mura Masa. He took his professional name from Japanese swordsmith Muramasa Sengo. Mura Masa’s track “The Lotus Eater” was picked up from SoundCloud by radio station BBC 1. In 2014, his mixtape “Soundtrack to a Death” was distributed worldwide by Jakarta Records. His self-titled debut album was released by his own label Anchor Point Records in 2017. Mura Masa’s remix of Haim’s song “Walking Away” won a Grammy in 2019 for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical.
Inspired by artists like Gorillaz and the Smiths, Mura Masa learned to play many different instruments. Throughout his performances, he can be seen playing the electric guitar, keyboards and drums. Mura Masa has also been influenced by Kendrick Lamar and Prince. He claims there are “sprinkles” of Prince throughout his debut album. Mura Masa has collaborated with ASAP Rocky, Charli XCX and NAO.
