Her younger brother is a comedian and an avant-garde musician. She studied opera at Juilliard and earned her Bachelor of Music in Voice in 2003.

James debuted on Broadway in 2010 with a role in the musical production of The Adams Family, which starred Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth.  In 2011, she landed roles in Frank Wildhorn’s Wonderland as well as the Broadway revival of Godspell. Though unable to perform during previews due to a sprained ankle, she did play her part during its run at The Circle in the Square Theater.

In 2013, she portrayed Teena Marie in Motown: The Musical. She performed with the troupe for the rest of 2013, leaving in December for a vocal performing tour. She had moonlighted as a solo artist while she performed on Broadway, often with a backing band composed of Matt Fieldes, Chris Fenwick, Damien Bassman and others, playing at numerous New York City Clubs.

She has since done more studio and live albums, such as her The White Album, which is James’ interpretation of the album by the Beatles. She often collaborates with the group Postmodern Jukebox.
