Retaliate quickly established the band’s reputation as a socially conscious metal group, as their lyrics almost exclusively focus on criticism of prevailing power structures and daily life in modern society. They take their name from the economic indicator developed by Arthur Okun in the late 80s which ranks life for the average citizen in the countries of the world.
Misery Index has been widely compared to the influential grindcore band Assuck for their highly aggressive and fast-paced instrumentation. They are also noted for their rigorous touring schedule, performing over 1000 concerts in over 40 countries in the late 2000s and early 2010s. They also run their own record label, Anarchos Records.
