She attracted critics’ attention after playing alongside DJ star Skrillex in 2004. As a youth Mija sang and toured with her local choir. She developed a passion for dance music, however, after becoming a promoter for raves when she was 17. She was one of the promoters for Skrillex early on in his career, before his mainstream success. After living with DJs the next two years, she began DJing full-time herself. She started to branch out from the rave scene, playing disco house music. She got the nickname “Mija” after collaborating with Eric Daily on Deux Yeux, a French house and nu-disco duo. She broke through to mainstream attention in 2014 when playing with Skrillex at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. She has since played Miami Music Week and Coachella.
The same year Mija started Fk A Genre, a tour & promotion brand that programs multiple musical genres into one show. She has stated that the goal of the brand is to give artists “free range” outside of “what their normal fan base expected.” In 2016 Mija launched her fashion brand, Made by Mija. She is the brand’s primary fashion designer. Mija’s debut full-length album Desert Trash was released in 2020.
