The wrestling program first began in 1888 when the school was called the Michigan Agricultural College but was dropped in 1906. The program was revived for the 1921-22 season, with the school’s inaugural record being 1-3. Soon enough Michigan State captured its first winning season during the 1926-27 season with James Devers serving as the inaugural coach. That same season the Spartans record was 4-3 overall.

Fendley Collins took over head coaching duties in 1930. The school’s program improved over time, with the 1940-41 team coming in as runner-up at the NCAA Championships. The 1941-42 team also came in second at the NCAA tournament as well as winning the Interstate Tournament Championship for the first time.
