Michael Nesmith is an American musician who gained fame as one of The Monkees, the band put together in 1966 for an American television series inspired by the films of The Beatles. The group broke up in 1968 and he went on to enjoy a long career as a performer, songwriter, producer, actor and writer. Born in Texas, his mother, Bette Nesmith Graham, made her money when she invented the correction fluid for typewriters that became known as Liquid Paper and as a result her son also is a well-known philanthropist.
He wrote poetry and sang as a child and after serving in the US Air Force, he moved to Los Angeles and began performing in local clubs. New Christy Minstrels singer Randy Sparks published some of his songs which were recorded by artists including Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
He released his first solo album, 'The Wichita Train Whistle Sings', in 1968 and after his stint on 'The Monkees', he had two singles on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart: 'Joanne' which went to number six and 'Silver Moon' which reached number seven. He released eleven albums in the 1970s including 'Nevada Fighter' (1971), 'Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash' (1973) and 'The Michael Nesmith Radio Special' (1979). He collaborated with artists such as John Ware and Orville 'Red' Rhodes and developed an interest in producing music videos. One of them, 'Michael Nesmith in Elephant Parts', won the Grammy Award for Best Video of the Year in 1981 and he went on to have a television series called 'Michael Nesmith in Television Parts' that featured future stars such as Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld and Garry Shandling.
He formed a home video firm called Pacific Arts Corporation in the 1970s and he was executive producer on films such as 'Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann' (1982) and 'Repo Man' (1984). He returned to recording in 1992 with the release of 'Tropical Campfires' and he was nominated for the Best New Age Album Grammy Award in 1994 for 'The Garden'. He formed the First National Band and the Second National Band and he has performed with surviving members of The Monkees on various anniversaries with a tour with fellow member Mickey Dolenz that was cut short when Nesmith suffered congestive heart failure; he subsequently underwent quadruple bypass surgery and in July 2018.
