Murphey cut his teeth performing at clubs in and around Dallas as a teenager before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a music career in earnest. His first big break came when his friend Michael Nesmith asked him to write a song for the band The Monkees. The album to which Murphey contributed would later sell over five million copies.
In 1971 the artist signed to A&M Records, through which he released his debut album Geronimo’s Cadillac the following year. The album’s lead single was a Top 40 hit on Billboard’s pop charts, and Rolling Stone called Murphey the best new songwriter in the country.
