Born in 1945 in Dallas, Murphey fell in love with country music while working on his uncle’s ranch as a boy. He began writing poetry and listening to albums by Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills and Hank Williams, artists who would greatly influence his later sound. 

Murphey cut his teeth performing at clubs in and around Dallas as a teenager before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a music career in earnest. His first big break came when his friend Michael Nesmith asked him to write a song for the band The Monkees. The album to which Murphey contributed would later sell over five million copies. 

In 1971 the artist signed to A&M Records, through which he released his debut album Geronimo’s Cadillac the following year. The album’s lead single was a Top 40 hit on Billboard’s pop charts, and Rolling Stone called Murphey the best new songwriter in the country.
