In 2013, the group released its first EPs, Guts and Teeth. The Eps became noted for their lyrics that reflect on growing up in Perth's suburbs. In 2015, the band released its debut studio album Oh Inhuman Spectacle, which was followed by the release of Everything Is Forgotten in 2017. In 2018, the group began touring internationally and celebrated the tour with a new single "Scream Whole". The following year, Methyl Ethel released Triage which peaked at number 11 on the ARIA Charts. In 2020, the group released the single "Majestic AF" from the EP, Hurts to Laugh.
