Turner hails from Melbourne, Australia while Franzmann is from Brisbane, Australia. Both artists have had a prior band and solo careers, with Mick Turner with Dirty Three and Franzmann going under the name of McKisco. Almost all of Mess Esque’s songs were written by Turner and Franzmann. The genres that they play in can be described as pop-rock and indie alternative rock. Their sound is reminiscent of groups such as Talk Talk, The Pastels and Tennniscoats.

Mess Esque has a sound that combines innocence, calm and emotion. While Franzmann’s vocals are soft and fragile, Turner’s instrumentation never steps on her singing. Mess Esque released their debut LP in April 2021, titled Dream #12 containing five tracks including “Big Old Blue,” “Make It Waves” and ”Dream #12.” This was followed by a second album also released in 2021 titled Mess Esque which has seven tracks including “Wake Up to Yesterday,” ”Sweetspot,” ”Forever” and “Jupiter.” Mess Esque has toured in Australia and the United States.
