Mendelssohn's Octet Concert Tickets
Enjoy one of the first examples of a form of chamber music composed by a child prodigy with Mendelssohn’s Octet tickets. German composer, pianist and conductor Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was born in 1809. At the age of sixteen, he composed an example of the relatively new genre of octet and gave a signed copy to his friend Eduard Rietz, who was also his violin teacher.
Octets were still very new and Mendelssohn may have been inspired by the Double Quartet in D minor, Op. 65 by Louis Spohr. However, where Spohr had composed it so that separate quartets were playing apart from each other, Mendelssohn’s piece was composed for everyone together. The instrument scoring for an octet is two violins, two violas and four cellos, with a note by the composer stating that he wanted the piece to “be played by all the instruments in the style of a symphony.”
Experience an early piece by one of the Romantic period with Mendelssohn’s Octet tickets. The work itself is composed in four movements and takes approximately 30 minutes. The first movement takes about half the time of the piece. Mendelssohn was quite particular on the dynamics of the work, instructing that the pianos and fortes were to be emphasized more than usual for this type of work.
Mendelssohn’s work is distinctive in that it uses much counterpoint. The finale, in particular, is notable as it is an eight-part fugato. It is sometimes performed with more instruments along with a double bass doubling the cello part.
