Born in Ipswich in 1970, Ferrick fell in love with music while visiting jazz clubs in Boston with her father. At five she began learning the violin, then studied the trumpet, piano and bass guitar while in high school. She later pursued advanced studies at both the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.
Ferrick cut her teeth performing at coffee houses and open mics in New York City, attracting her first serious attention when she was called in as a last minute substitute to open for Morrissey. Her performance caught the eye of Atlantic Records, to which she would sign to release her first two albums Massive Blur and Willing to Wait in the early 90s.
Ferrick’s style has been compared to artists like Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and Radiohead. An outspoken advocate for gay rights, her 1998 album Everything I Need earned a nod for Album of the Year at the Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards.
