Born in 1974 in Novosibirsk, Vengerov began learning to play the violin at five years old. By age ten he had won the International Karol Lipiński and Henryk Wieniawski Young Violin Player Competition.
As a teenager Vengerov studied under famed violinist Zakhar Bron, then in 1990 rose to world attention when he won London’s International Carl Flesch Competition. His performance at the competition would lead to a deal with Teldec Records and the start of his professional career.
In 1997 Vengerov was made a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador, performing for the next several years for disadvantaged youth in Kosovo, Thailand and Uganda. In 2010 he was appointed the inaugural chief conductor of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad Orchestra, where he premiered several works by contemporary composers, most notably the La Joie de la Souffrance concerto by Qigang Chen. To date Vengerov has earned a slew of awards and accolades including the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance in 2003.
