Born in 1961 in London, Padmore learned to play piano and the clarinet when he was a boy. He received a choral scholarship to attend King’s College, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in music. Padmore has since enjoyed a prolific career in concerts, recitals and particularly opera. He first rose to international attention for his renditions of Bach’s Passions with the Berlin Philharmonic.
Padmore has collaborated with several noteworthy opera directors including Mark Morris, Deborah Warner and Peter Brook. He has sung in lead roles in The Corridor, Jeptha and La Clemenza di Tito, among many others. Padmore has also performed in concerts with a number of leading world orchestras including the New York, London and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras. His recording of As Steals the Morn won the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award, and his recording of Schubert’s Cycles won the 2010 Gramophone Vocal Solo Award. Padmore currently serves as the artistic director of Cornwall’s St. Endellion Summer Music Festival, and in 2019 was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
