However, he soon abandoned his studies and began singing in a group named La Gang de Chums. In 1991, Hervieux auditioned for the play Don Juan Comes Back From War, which included parts of an opera by Mozart. Despite his lack of training, he gained a role in the play. Inspired to keep going, Hervieux enrolled in the Montreal Conservatory of Music, where his rich, tenor voice impressed his teachers.
