The company uses various methods to create innovative immersive productions with distinctive sights and sounds.  

Techniques used include puppets and shadow puppetry along with actors and live feed cameras displayed with both multiple screens and vintage overhead projectors along with live music and multi-channel sound. Manual Cinema’s shows have been displayed at such venues as Public Theater’s Under-the-Radar Festival in New York City, BAM in New York City, Court Theatre in Chicago and the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival in the United Kingdom.

Dir also writes, directs and handles puppet design for the company.  Other co-Artistic Directors include Sarah Furnace, who also performs as a puppeteer as well as narrative design and choreography and Ben Kauffman, an interactive media artist. The 2017 video “The Forger,” created for the New York Times, earned an Emmy for the Company. Among the other awards the company has won, the Chicago Tribune named the company Chicago Artists of the Year in 2018.
