First rising to prominence in 1985 with their political activism during the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, Maldita Vecindad quickly became known both in their hometown of Mexico City and internationally as a group that fought for the safety and health of their people. They were also among the first Mexican bands to play rock music entirely in Spanish, influenced by groups like The Police and The Cure.
The group wouldn’t reach true prominence until the release of their 1989 album El Circo, which led to them finally opening a US tour. The group would be seen playing alongside INXS, Bob Dylan and Jane’s Addiction, to name just a few acts. By the 1990s, Maldita Vecindad was considered a staple in Latin American music, being compared to famous names like Mano Negra.
