He is primarily known for his work as one half of the pop duo She & Him and as a member of the folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk. Born in 1973 in Glendale, Calif., Ward moved to Portland with his family at an early age. He fell in love with music listening to Beatles’ records as a boy, learning to play guitar and making his first recordings at age fifteen. 

In 1999 Ward released his debut solo album Duet for Guitars #2 through Co-Dependent Records, which earned praise from publications like Pitchfork for its unadorned, authentic sound. In the mid-2000s, after contributing to the soundtrack for the film The Go-Getter, Ward began collaborating with the film’s star Zooey Deschanel. Soon the pair formed the pop duo She & Him, releasing their debut album Volume One in 2008. Volume One reached within the top forty on the Billboard 200 and earned significant critical acclaim. The following year Ward joined Monsters of Folk, whose debut album was a top twenty hit on the Billboard 200. M.
