Luis Vargas' music career kicked off in 1980 and he became one of the first mainstream bachata artists.
The Latin American artist produced and self-released his albums during the beginning of his career. His debut El Debate: Merengues de Verdad came out in 1983, followed by El Rey Supremo in 1988. Both of these albums began to find popularity on local radio stations, leading the performer to sign with Sony Music Latin in 1996.
