Kaplansky was born in Chicago in 1960 and found a love for music playing songs on the piano with her father. At 18 Kaplansky moved to New York City and became a noted artist in the Greenwich Village folk music scene. Her time there saw her perform with artists who would go on to achieve mainstream success, including Richard Shindell and Suzanne Vega.
Kaplansky shifted her focus in the early ’80s, attending Yeshiva University to pursue a doctoral degree in psychology. Kaplansky’s musical work with artist Shawn Colvin attracted the attention of significant record labels, but she turned the labels away to become a hospital psychologist. In the early 90’s Kaplansky returned to music, however, and through Colvin’s assistance released The Tide in 1994. Four years later she joined folk artists Richard Shindell and Dar Williams to form the band Cry Cry Cry, releasing their self-titled album to much critical acclaim.
