Anderson was born in St. Paul Minnesota in 1953, the ninth of eleven children. Anderson went to Johnson Senior High School in St. Paul. He made his debut on national television on The Tonight Show in 1985. In 1987, Louie appeared in a comedy special on Showtime. In 1995, he created the hit Saturday-morning animated series Life with Louie, based on his childhood that ran for three years.
CBS and Anderson created a show called The Louie Show which was canceled after six episodes in 1996. In 1999, Louie became the host of Family Feud, replacing longtime host Richard Dawson. In 2012, Anderson had a stand-up special called Louie Anderson: Big Baby Boomer, poking fun at his bad habits, aging body and pesky family members. From 2016 to 2019, Louie played the role of Christine Baskets on the show Baskets, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2016 for the role.
