They were one of the first groups to rise to prominence in post-revolutionary Cuba, and are regarded as a significant force in the evolution of contemporary Cuban music. In particular, Los Van Van contributed to the development of the then-nascent timba and songo dance music subgenres.
Los Van Van was founded by bassist Juan Formell in 1969. Formell had previously gained experience in the charanga style as the music director for Elio Reve’s orchestra and the Changui ‘68 group. He formed Los Van Van with a vision of combining traditional charanga arrangements with North American rock and roll. Through the ‘70s and ‘80s, the band experimented with synthesizers, hip hop and funk styles, garnering significant critical acclaim for their sophisticated musicianship.
