Jimmy Lester. They were originally called “The Straitjackets.” The band dissolved very quickly but then was remade with the addition of bassist E. Scott Esbeck in 1994.
Their debut album, The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straitjackets, was released in 1995. Due to the popularity of the movie Pulp Fiction and the surf music revival, the band gathered a following, even though they are not really a surf band. Pete Curry replaced Esbeck in 1994, as the group was recording their follow-up album The Velvet Touch of Los Straitjackets. Other lineup changes have occurred since then. Lester left in 2005 and was replaced by Jason “Teen Beat” Smay. In 2010, Amis left the group as he was being treated for multiple myeloma. The group has recorded over 15 studio albums, released more than five live albums and been involved in multiple collaborations over the years.
