The band's first EP, Triumph, which was released in 2010, had a distinct metalcore sound but also crossed over into deathcore. The band's second EP, Bone Kingdom, was the first to feature a deathcore sound, which was considerably more straightforward than that of bands like Oceano and Chelsea Grin.

In December 2013, the band's third EP, Maleficium, was released. It peaked at number 3 on the iTunes Metal Chart. After the publication of Maleficium, Lorna Shore announced the Carnifex's Die Without Hope Tour, which included I Declare War, Betraying the Martyrs, and Here Comes the Kraken. Before releasing their debut album, the group toured with bands such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Archspire, Fallujah, Fit for an Autopsy, Cattle Decapitation, Dying Fetus, Deicide, Within the Ruins.

Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, who have previously worked with groups such as August Burns Red and Rivers of Nihility, produced the LP. On June 11, 2021, the band launched a new song entitled "To the Hellfire." The song exploded in popularity for the band, reaching number 1 on the iTunes metal chart in its first week of availability. It was also selected by Revolver Magazine's readers as the “Best Song of 2021 So Far.”
