Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer, and Ed Kowalczyk started the band when they were still in high school. After graduating from high school, the group decided on the name “Public Affection.” They self-released their first album, The Death of a Dictionary, under that name. Through more self-promotion, the band landed gigs at CBGB in New York in 1990. By June 1991, Live became the official name along with a contract with Radioactive Records.
Their first EP with Radioactive Records, Four Songs, contained the successful single “Operation Spirit The Tyranny of Tradition).” It peaked at number nine on the Modern Rock charts. Live had achieved mainstream success by the time their second album, Throwing Copper, was released. Live toured with Peter Gabriel on his WOMAD tour and appeared on stage at Woodstock ‘94. One of the band’s most popular songs, “Lightning Crashes,” topped the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for ten consecutive weeks. Much of the group’s post-90s music has been experimental as they’ve enjoyed the freedom of producing their own music.
