The group was founded in the 1950s by Christopher Collins and owed its name in part to its lead singer Jerome Anthony “Little Anthony” Gourdine, who was noted for his high-pitched voice.
Little Anthony was originally called The Chesters and included Tracy Lord, Nathaniel Rodgers and Ronald Ross, and Collins. Anthony Gourdine joined, and the group recorded for Apollo records briefly. The group changed their names to “The Imperials” in 1958 and signed with End Records.
Experience doo-wop by the pioneers of the time with Little Anthony tickets. Their first single with the new name was “Tears on My Pillow” which sold over 1,000,000 copies and earned a gold disc by the RIAA. The B-Side on the single “Two People in the World” also was a hit. Their next song was “Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Pop.”
Gourdine left in 1961 to pursue a solo career and returned in 1963. The lineup then comprised Gourdine, Ernest Wright, Collins and Sammy Strain, who would become inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the O’Jays. The group would then become successful under the new Don Costa Productions label, releasing a string of hits.
Little Anthony and the Imperials has been on television, making appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show, and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
