J.B. Hutto, the blues recording artist and singer/songwriter, introduced Lil Ed and his cousin, James “Pookie” Young, to Hutto’s student, Dave Weld. Weld and Young would become the first two members of the Blues Imperials band in 1989, with Lil Ed on lead guitar and vocals backed by Michael Garrett on rhythm guitar and vocals, Young on bass and Kelly Littleton on drums.
After years of playing, they were offered a chance to be a part of a compilation album entitled New Bluebloods, with the group submitting the track “Young Thing.” Producer and label owner Bruce Iglauer encouraged them to record additional tracks and they recorded an entire studio album in that session, released in 1986 as Roughhousin’.
