Chippendale and Gibson had earned reputations in college for their musical sophistication and sought each other out to form the band. The duo was instrumental in establishing Fort Thunder, an incubator for local avant-garde musicians. They released their first album in 1998 after developing the songs at Fort Thunder.
Lightning Bolt’s most critically acclaimed album came in 2005 however, Hypermagic Mountain. Their sound makes use of high-speed drumming and heavily distorted vocals and is even louder and more aggressive than traditional punk rock.
